Middle School Special Education Teacher, Grades 7 & 8

Description:

The special education teacher identifies needs of students with special education needs in relation to grade level objectives, applies a program of instruction consistent with student learning needs and curriculum objectives as outlined in the Individual Education Plan (IEP), uses appropriate teaching strategies and instructional materials, and assesses student progress.

Responsibilities:

The position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties:

  • Identify specific student learning outcomes to be attained in relation to student learning needs and IEP objectives and maintain appropriate documentation
  • Determine a sequence of learning experiences, utilizing instructional materials and appropriate supplementary materials adopted by EVCS
  • Develop and utilize written plans, that may include long-term and daily/weekly plans, as the basis of instruction
  • Apply appropriate teaching strategies consistent with student needs, selected curriculum, and time allocations
  • Make appropriate accommodations for student physical, educational, or behavioral disabilities
  • Assist in training regular education teachers regarding successful integration of students with special needs into their classes and activities; assist with modification of activities if needed
  • Consult and collaborate with regular education staff, support staff, and administration regarding strategies for student success
  • Provide assistance to students with special education needs in regular education classes when appropriate
  • Develop and communicate to students and parents the expectations regarding student behavior and related consequences as per EVCS policies
  • Coordinate other services to the student as needed, for example, speech therapy, adapted physical education, occupational and physical therapy
  • Make appropriate use of instructional time; maintain an appropriate physical environment and appropriate individual, class, and program records
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, utilizing means such as parent-teacher conferences, telephone calls, and quarterly written progress reports
  • Receive parent requests for information and assistance and respond through conferences, telephone conversations, and written communications
  • Encourage parents to provide in-home support
  • Provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility

Minimum Qualifications:

      • Valid NYS Special Education Teacher Certification as required by law
      • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.

Elementary Classroom Teacher (K-6) (Full-time)

Description:

High-performing urban K-8 charter school in Buffalo, NY seeks elementary classroom teachers.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement instructional units that are aligned to the New York State Common Core Standards and the curriculum of the Elmwood Village Charter Schools
  • Use data from all assessment sources to monitor student progress toward meeting academic targets
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners
  • Organize flexible, goal-oriented groups that are based on students’ instructional needs
  • Coordinate with other teachers to meet program requirements of the Elmwood Village Charter Schools, including participation in grade level planning meetings
  • Provide an inviting, exciting, stimulating, and innovative learning environment
  • Coordinate the classroom instructional team, which can include a teaching assistant, an AIS teacher, and ESL teacher, and/or a special education teacher
  • Ensure that lessons are rigorous and allow for students to elaborate, analyze, make cross-curricular connections, apply what they have learned, and develop creativity and problem-solving strategies
  • Maintain open communication with parents and encourage parent participation
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning by following the Responsive Classroom and Cooperative Discipline models
  • Enable students to develop social responsibility by faithfully following the Responsive Classroom and Cooperative Discipline models
  • Promote connection to the wider community through field trips, guest presenters, and service projects

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree, or enrollment in a master’s program, is required. Prior teaching experience is preferred.

Middle School English Language Arts Teacher, Grades 7 & 8

Description: 

The Middle School ELA Teacher will be part of a two-teacher middle school ELA team which meets regularly and collaborates on planning, instructional practices, student support, and assessment creation. There is an expectation that this person will be collaborative, child-centered in their approach, and supportive of the Responsive Classroom model.

The Middle School ELA Teacher will also have additional duties, such as leading an advisory/homeroom, chaperoning class trips, etc.

Substitute Teachers

The Elmwood Village Charter School is looking for qualified substitute teachers. These positions will be on an as-needed basis, but will be called frequently. Substitute teachers are paid $100 per day and $50 for half-day assignments.

Responsibilities

      • Maintaining a safe and welcoming classroom environment
      • Leading and facilitating activities for children
      • Modeling positive and appropriate classroom behavior
      • Maintaining a clean and organized classroom environment
      • Supporting and assisting fellow staff and management
      • Maintaining a high level of energy throughout the work day

Qualifications & Requirements

      • Satisfactorily pass a criminal background check
      • Bachelor’s degree
      • Teaching certification (or working towards certification) is preferred
      • Teaching experience is preferred
      • Substantial experience working with children is a MUST
      • Reliable, punctual and available on short notice
      • Love of education and children grades Pre-K through 8th grade
      • Great communication and organizational skills
      • MUST provide two professional references (at least one from someone in a supervisory role)
