Elmwood Village Charter School Hertel is looking for a servant leader to join our shared leadership team and diverse school community as Principal of our Hertel Campus. EVCS leaders bring dedication, passion and most importantly understand that relationships are at the center of everything we do. Specifically, we are looking for a candidate who is passionate about urban education, social-emotional learning, diversity and inclusion, and the success for all students. Encouraging a school culture where everyone is welcome and relationships are fostered is integral to the role. The Principal is the key culture leader and sets the tone for a positive, inclusive and supportive school community that is responsive to its members’ needs.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a student-centered, dynamic Principal:

Instructional Leadership:

In connection with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Instructional Coaches the Principal:

  • Facilitates a shared vision and mission for student success
  • Provides ongoing direct evaluation feedback to maximize student success
  • Supervises instruction and fidelity to the school’s instructional programs
  • Leads collaborative teams in work that results in measurable progress for all students
  • Creates and communicates goals that promote student progress
  • Creates and supports a master schedule that maximizes instructional time

School Climate:

In collaboration with the Leadership Team, the Principal:

  • Creates and sets a vision for overall staff culture that creates a love of our students, a love of learning and values diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Creates and maintains a positive, inviting, responsive and safe learning environment
  • Builds strong relationships with all stakeholders and community members to promote student success
  • Ensures fidelity to the Responsive Classroom approach school-wide
  • Formulates and implements school safety plans
  • Develops a culture of collaboration, trust, learning and respect for all acknowledging differences and values

Human Resources Management

In collaboration with the Operations Director and Human Resources Manager, the Principal:

  • Fosters a positive working culture where each employee is motivated to give their best work
  • Demonstrates a commitment to hiring practices that create equitable and inclusive practices to strive towards diversity
  • Creates strong systems to hold staff to high expectations, while also creating caring relationships to ensure a strong culture that leads to high retention rates
  • Selects high-quality, mission-aligned faculty and staff
  • Understands, implements, and enforces employee disciplinary procedures with equity and fairness
  • Ensures that all faculty and staff have high quality professional development opportunities

Organizational Management:

In collaboration with the Leadership Team, the Principal:

  • Manages procedural, contractual, legal, and reporting responsibilities
  • Collaboratively plans and manages the school budget and ensures accountability for responsible use of fiscal resources
  • Provides access to technology resources that support students and staff
  • Demonstrates proactive decision making and efficient operation of the school.

Communication and Community Relations:

In collaboration with the Leadership Team, the Principal:

  • Communicates timely information to all stakeholders
  • Engages in regular communication with all stakeholders to respond to the academic and social-emotional needs of students
  • Advocates for students and EVCS by collaborating with stakeholder groups for input and assistance
  • Collaborates with community resources to locate resources and promote positive relationships
  • Communicates effectively and professionally in speaking and writing
  • Provides a variety of opportunities for family involvement in school life.


  • Makes decisions that support the mission and vision of EVCS
  • Assumes responsibility and takes initiative to support the mission of EVCS
  • Possesses a growth mindset to improve personal and professional skills
  • Listens thoughtfully and responds constructively to feedback
  • Is ethical, punctual, and reliable; maintains professionalism at all times
  • Communicates with school’s board of directors, attending all meetings, presenting a board report, ensuring high quality partnership

  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of success in school leadership, as well as a commitment to the Responsive Classroom model of social and emotional learning
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching
  • NYS certification as a school district administrator or school building leader (or comparable experience)
  • Passionate about urban education and a belief that all students deserve an excellent education regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or zip code.
