The EVCS Way

Mission

The Elmwood Village Charter Schools will provide a stimulating and engaging learning environment that recognizes student capability, fosters their connectedness to their immediate and broader communities, and offers them ways to contribute to school life. EVCS believes that all students can and will learn at high levels when provided with the right learning conditions.

Practice

Through a combination of strong academics and a focus on social emotional learning and arts integration, EVCS has consistently been among the highest performing schools in Western New York.

Values

EVCS emphasizes social responsibility, arts integration, multiculturalism, and community alliances. The belief that social-emotional curriculum is as important as academics is a core operating value. All EVCS students are offered tools for social-emotional and academic success. Our campuses are peaceful, diverse, and supportive school communities. At Elmwood Village Charter Schools, each student knows that they are valued and respected, and that their contributions are valuable to the school and the larger community.

History

EVCS is a grassroots charter school founded by parents and educators to give all students in Buffalo access to a high-quality education in a diverse, caring environment. It was founded in 2006 and has grown from 125 students to 900 students in grades K-8. EVCS was founded on the belief that all students can and will learn at high levels when provided with the right learning conditions.

In September 2012, Elmwood Village Charter Schools moved into the historic 40 Days Park school. In September 2017, EVCS opened its second campus at 665 Hertel Avenue.

What is a Charter School

What is a Charter School?

Charter schools are free, publicly-funded, independently-operated schools of choice that are allowed to operate with more freedom than traditional public schools in exchange for increased accountability. Charter schools are governed by a board of trustees. Charter schools are offered certain freedoms— mainly over the budget, curriculum and personnel. Due to this large amount of freedom; the level of academic accountability is much higher than a Public school. This is beneficial because it is a guarantee that your child is learning what is required and more. Charter schools operate under five-year performance contracts, and are held to the same New York State Regents’ performance standards established for all public schools. All programs and policies for a charter school are defined in the school’s charter documents. Charter schools are legally bound to operate in a fiscally and ethically responsible manner in accordance with their charters.

Do students have to meet certain requirements to enroll?

There are no admissions criteria; any student who is grade-level eligible can enroll through a non-discriminatory admissions lottery.

How are Charter Schools Different from Public Schools?

Charter schools can be started by educators, parents, community leaders and not for profit organizations. Because they are held to very high standards and are responsible for educating public school students, charter schools are approved only after a rigorous review process. Once schools open, they are governed by a not-for-profit board of trustees. They are exempt from many state and local regulations regarding curriculum development, personnel hiring and financial management, but must succeed in hitting established targets for their academic programs.

How are Charter Schools Funded?

Charter schools receive a per-pupil allocation from the state. This per-pupil allocation varies from year to year, but in the City of Buffalo, in general, has been routinely equivalent to approximately 50% (including facilities funding) of the total per pupil expenditure of a Buffalo public school student. In order to make up for this funding discrepancy, charter schools must privately raise funds. For more information on the NYS charter school funding formula, click here.

What are the Benefits of Enrolling My Child in a Charter School like EVCS?

Charter schools provide an innovative alternative to traditional public schools. With their high degree of autonomy, aggressive performance goals and strict accountability, charter schools:

  • Enable teachers to be more creative and innovative in their teaching methods and subject matter;
  • Provide an added educational resources in areas not provided by public schools;
  • Tend to be smaller in classroom size and overall student body for more personalized attention;
  • Allow parents to choose a school based on what they think will work best for their children;
  • Held responsible for meeting student performance goals.

Elmwood Village Charter Schools are authorized by the State University of New York Board of Trustees.
