EVCS Statement on Equity and Racial Justice Goals

Dear EVCS Families,

We are compelled to reach out to our community at this time.  We do not presume to speak for members of our community.  We acknowledge that silence is not an option.

The current climate is a reflection of centuries of injustice and oppression. Social reforms attempt to put a dent in addressing racism, but cannot catch up, nor work at the same rate as the daily oppressions in our country.  Racism is not an event, it is a system.  Over the course of history, consciously or unconsciously, schools have reinforced systematic racism inherent in our society. Breaking down the walls of systemic racism requires that people be willing to act, to speak up, and to urgently take a stand against that which is quite literally the difference between life and death.  We don’t have the answers, but we must do better.

Our responsibility in this work is huge.  EVCS was founded to create a safe and diverse school community where every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive.  EVCS commits to preparing our students to be critical thinkers who use their voices for active civic engagement. We commit to growing as an anti-racist and inclusive organization through professional development and continued efforts to increase diversity on our staff. We commit to listening to families to hear how we can best support you and your child.

This will be the bedrock upon which our shared commitment to our school’s mission and our collective work with our students will stand. We draw inspiration from the words of Barack Obama:

“It falls on us, regardless of our race or station – to work together to create “a new normal” in which the legacy of bigotry and unequal treatment no longer infects our institutions or our hearts.”

We remain driven to learn, to act, and to contribute to love, compassion, and equity in this world.
